The greatest Buffalo Wings that Melbourne ever saw.... Like all good things, they rose up, burned brightly, and then, in an instant... they were gone; The Alehouse Project's Wings, at their peak, were stunning, and will be forever missed.

Brunswick's original Craft Beer pub saw kitchen staff come and go during the journey and, of course, that saw wildly fluctuating quality in Buffalo Wing... but, as this review doubles as a eulogy for a Melbourne pioneer, The Rules will apply to the wings when they were at their very, very best: a Buffalo Wing Benchmark.

The Scores

  • The Specs: Double-Jointed Perfection - each wing a magnificent combination of drum, flat, and that weird pointy feathery bit. RATING: 10.
  • The sauce: Clearly a combination of Frank's Red Hot and butter, and very little, if anything, else. RATING: 8.
  • Crunch: Floured, seasoned, deep fried, then tossed in sauce. RATING: 8
  • Serving size & price/Value for Money: 6 double jointed wings for $12! And on Thursdays, 6 for $6. Outstanding value. RATING: 10
  • Heat/spice level: Nearly aways the perfect amount of chilli heat. But, of course, if you use Frank's Red Hot, you cannot go wrong. Rating: 8
  • Flavour: At their best, The Alehouse Wings were limited only to how many one could fit in one's stomach. RATING 9
  • Celery: Was there Celery sticks? Yes there was. RATING: 5.
  • Dipping Sauce: Blue Cheese? Yep, Blue Cheese Dipping Sauce, on point. Rating: 5.
  • Other Stuff: Always a fun place to watch football, Fight Night, Cricket, or other sports, The Alehouse Project also had one of the most carefully curated tap lists in Melbourne - as one might expect from one of the very first venues of its type in the city. RATING 8.

OVERALL RATING 72/80. No bonus points, as The Alehouse Project NEVER provided any moist towelettes for post-wing clean up.

As the inspiration for this page, this score will take some beating...!
