The Thornbury Local, Thornbury VIC

Interestingly enough, The Thornbury Local was the final catalyst for the finalisation and publishing of this weird little Buffalo Wing Blog. Whilst the origins were already in place, including pics, the flavour and experience at The Thornbury Local encouraged me to finish it all off and put it out there!

But, having said that... how did The Thornbury Local's Wings match up against The Rules?

The Scores

  • The Specs: Flats and drums. This is getting monotonous. Will someone pony up for at least single jointed wings?  RATING: 3.
  • The Sauce: These might be Franks Red Hot but there is an underlying iffy-ness there. It might simply be the butter to Frank's ratio or... they've added honey or paprika, as is occasionally suggested. I'd never, ever suggest those additions, mind you. RATING: 7
  • Crunch: Crunch! The mouthfeel of the Thornbury Local's wings is very much traditional - the wings are most certainly not battered, but do have the ol' seasoned flour fried crunch! RATING: 8
  • Serving size & price/Value for Money: $17 for half a pound of wings - how many wings is that? I have no idea, I didn't count them for either serve! There is, I'm told, a $1 Wing Night every Thursday but I was not there for that, and cannot vouch for it. RATING: 6
  • Heat/spice level: Three Bears level of heat at the Thornbury Local - not too hot, not too un-hot, JUUUUST right. Rating: 8
  • Flavour: Whilst the sauce is perhaps not your traditional Frank' s Red Hot concoction, it is delicious. And it is plentiful. And there's plenty of crunchy texture here. Perhaps the best guide is that I ordered a second helping! RATING 8
  • Celery: Was there Celery sticks? Yes! There was! RATING: 5.
  • Dipping Sauce: Blue Cheese? Yes, Blue Cheese. RATING: 5.
  • Other Stuff: Chilled out venue on a Sunday afternoon with friendly and enthusiastic service. The wings came out very quickly, and I was able to enjoy an all-important IPA pint with my feast. RATING 7.

OVERALL RATING 57/80. No bonus points; no moist towelettes for post-wing clean up.

A really good showing by The Thornbury Local. A score of 57 out of 80 puts them right at the top of the table (at the time of writing). Testament to this, I was informed proudly that the Local's wings had been voted as Best in Melbourne by a mysterious roving troupe of Wing Eaters. Whoever you are, I think we might have something in common...!

The wings at The Thornbury Local are absolutely worth trying and especially if you can find yourself a table on Thursday night $1 wing night!
