So, you may need to forgive my brevity here... this review, at The Beerhive, Pittsburgh PA, was done on the sly whilst at a casual business dinner... And yet, something tells me there's a score brewing here... but let us see! Who runs the world? The Rules run the world!
The Scores
- The Specs: Flats and drums... I really am the odd one out. But I don't care. Double-jointed wings rule and nothing else is better. RATING: 5.
- The Sauce: According to my notes (I opted not to whip out the laptop mid-business dinner to fill this review...) more sauce would have been appreciated but what sauce was there was most satisfying! RATING: 7
- Crunch: Clearly deep fried, and not straying too far from the traditional coated crunch that should be the norm. Should happen more often TBH... RATING: 7
- Serving size & price/Value for Money: Twelve wings for USD $14; That's less than AUD$2 per wing and we are on fire here. That's proper value! RATING: 8
- Heat/spice level: Not quite the Goldilocks. Not too hot, not too mild, but I wouldn't call it 'just right' either. Could have coped with the spice here all night. RATING: 5
- Flavour: As per above, these wings were 'most satisfying'! A tasty batch of wings made without dicking with the traditional style. RATING 7
- Celery: Was there Celery sticks? Yes! Celery Sticks! RATING: 5.
- Dipping Sauce: Blue Cheese? Yes, Blue Cheese! The second tiny takeaway tub of the trip; but there was Blue Cheese!. RATING: 5.
- Other Stuff: Excellent taplist, excellent bar service, friendly bar staff. During my visit, I was able to drink some excellent IPAs to accompany my wings, which is always appreciated. Not only that, The Beerhive is a venue that I could visit at least once a week, if I lived nearby. Dive bar mixed with craft beer bar, and it serves wings? Why don't we have these things in Melbourne??? RATING 8.
OVERALL RATING 57/80. Yep. There was moist towelettes... are we headed for a boil-over? Is some foreign city about to take the lead in this Melbourne, Australia Wing review site???
No! Its a tie! The Beerhive, thanks mostly due the simple inclusions of celery, blue cheese, and moist towelettes, is tied at the top on 57 with The Thornbury Local! Thank goodness for that.
