Three days in San Francisco, much craft beer enjoyed, and a hangover worthy of Andre the Giant... So, what to do upon arrival at the United International terminal at SFO? Search for wings!
Lo and behold, not far from the departure gate, a place called Mustards Grill. The wings? Something called CRAZY GOOD SMOKED CHICKEN WINGS. Not buffalo wings, certainly, but were they any good? The Rules will tell us!
The Scores
- The Specs: Flats and drums. Easy eating but not a favourite style.. RATING: 5.
- The sauce: Dry seasoned wings rather than tossed in any particular sauce. RATING: 0.
- Crunch: Floured, Seasoned and Deep Fried; CRUNCH! RATING: 8
- Serving size & price/Value for Money: 8 flats/drums for USD $18.95, around AUD$28 - terrible value! RATING: 2
- Heat/spice level: No heat to speak of, though one of the accompanying dipping sauces helped in that regard. Rating: 5
- Flavour: DELICIOUS. Whilst not authentic buffalo (and not described as such, to be fair) these smoked wings were an excellent surprise. If time permitted, I most certainly would have ordered a second round. RATING 9
- Celery: Was there Celery sticks? There was not. RATING: 0.
- Dipping Sauce: Blue Cheese? Yep, there was Blue Cheese Dipping Sauce! Rating: 5.
- Other Stuff: As an Airport based food service, Mustards Grill SFO will always be up against it for a review such as this. The wings were not buffalo-style but were excellent. And, a tasty Elysian Hazy IPA was available on tap to accompany the wings. Service was most attentive, and you can bet that this Aussie was happy to leave a tip. RATING 8.
OVERALL RATING 42/80. No bonus points; no moist towelettes for post-wing clean up.
For the second time in two Wing feeds, the lack of Buffalo Wing essentials gives otherwise great chicken wings a poor score! The Mustards Grill wings were served dry with a seasoned coating, rather than tossed in sauce. And, the all important celery sticks to clean up the blue cheese sauce were also absent. And so, we move on!
