BrewDog Pentridge

BrewDog Pentridge

BrewDog... home of the solid gold beer can that nearly bankrupted the founder. And home to a few other unsavoury reports too, over the last few years. Irregardless of all of that, BrewDog has opened in Melbourne, its in my backyard, and they serve something described as 'Our World Famous Wings'! So we gotta see!

How does BrewDog measure up against The Rules - will they be winners or will there be more unsavouriness from this global brand? Lets gooooo!

The Scores

  • The Specs: Weirdly, 11 of 12 wings were drums. As a result, I think I now know - I'm a flats guy. That is, aside from the glory of the rarely seen double jointed buffalo wing! RATING: 5
  • The Sauce: Not Franks; the sauce tasted more fruity and less Cayenne-Pepper-vinegary than it probably should. Perhaps they use a Melbourne Hot Sauce Co. option here? The place is dripping in bottles from that local producer. Also, whilst honey has oft been described as a potential buffalo sauce ingredient, here, it was obvious. Its no good. Don't put honey in your buffalo sauce, kids. RATING: 5
  • Crunch: Yes, crunch. The 24 hour buttermilk marination, subsequently combined with a decent seasoned flour dusting, made the BrewDog wings crunchy AF. I don't know though... should Buffalo Wings have that buttermilk thing going on? Or is that more Nashville style? Or, shit... is it Kentucky style??? RATING: 7
  • Serving size & price/Value for Money: About 25 bucks for 12 flats/drums... just over $2 a wing is standard in 2023 but yeah... I don't know, Man. Apparently they have bottomless wings on Wednesdays, for $25 - for me, that'd be magnificent value.  RATING: 5
  • Heat/spice level: Enjoyed the heat level at BrewDog and could easily have ordered another round. Not skating around this - I visited on Wednesday and did NOT get offered bottomless wings... I'm taking away a point for that! RATING: 7
  • Flavour: Absolutely nothing wrong with the flavour or experience within the BrewDog wings. I was happy, though not really a fan of the honey addition. Others will definitely enjoy it. But nah. RATING 6
  • Celery: Was there Celery sticks? There was not. RATING: 0.
  • Dipping Sauce: Blue Cheese? Yes Blue Cheese... but I ain't scrambling back for it. Just kinda there. RATING: 4.
  • Other Stuff: BrewDog is a global brand now and, as such, you know what you gonna get. Nothing here is bad. But am I coming back? Aahhh... not so often. I will say this though - the Elvis IPA is way better than I remember it. Is grapefruit an older person thing? I hated this 10 years ago... RATING 6
  • Bonus Points: Nope. No bonus points for moist towelette supply.

OVERALL RATING 45/80.

I reckon I've fallen into this trap before... "BrewDog and their World Famous Wings!"! Well guess what, kilt wearers? Your "world famous wings" couldn't even beat the buffalo popcorn wings I ate last week... and they're not even wings!!!
